Dear Residents, We would like to make you aware of a fraudulent doorstep scam that has recently been reported involving individuals falsely claiming to represent Network Plus / National Grid. 📌 Scam Details: A female wearing a high‑visibility vest has approached the homes of elderly residents, stating that essential work needed to be carried out on their electricity meter. She claimed the work was free of charge and arranged a date to return to complete the supposed repairs. Following the visit, the residents received a letter confirming the work. However, after checking directly with the companies named, it was confirmed that no work had been scheduled and the approach was a scam. This type of fraud is designed to gain the trust of vulnerable individuals, often as a precursor to theft, financial exploitation, or unlawful access to the home. How You Can Protect Yourself ✔️ Always check ID thoroughly Legitimate utility workers will always carry identification. Do not be afraid to close the door while you verify their details using an official number from the company’s website — not the one they provide. ✔️ Utility companies rarely make unannounced visits Planned work is typically communicated in advance via official letters or emails. If someone arrives unexpectedly, treat it with caution. ✔️ Do not agree to work on the spot No genuine representative will pressure you to make immediate decisions or appointments at the door. ✔️ Keep the door closed while checking You are entitled to take your time and verify who you are speaking to. ✔️ Look out for neighbours Elderly or vulnerable residents are often targeted. If you notice suspicious callers, check in on your neighbours or report the activity to us. ✔️ Report any suspicious behaviour immediately If you believe someone is posing as a utility worker or you feel unsafe, please contact us on 101 or 999 in an emergency. You can also report fraud via Action Fraud at: www.actionfraud.police.uk. We Need Your Help Please share this message with friends, family, and neighbours to help prevent further incidents. The more awareness we raise, the harder it becomes for offenders to exploit vulnerable people in our community. Stay alert and stay safe. PCSO James Mackenzie Neighbourhood Policing Team
